A HISTORY OF TAUNTON BLACKBROOK
Blackbrook originally started as a youth team based in Ruishton a village on the outskirts of Taunton. They were very successful at youth level and decided to keep the nucleus of players together and enter men's football in the Taunton Sunday Football League in the early eighties. After consecutively winning the lower divisions they became Premier Champions and Cup winners, they successfully applied to join the then Somerset Senior League in 1991. They were immediately successful and won promotion to the second division as champions. In the close season Blackbrook merged with Taunton Civil Service FC (formerly CBH FC) who brought in an experienced administration team and three other football teams; two Sunday and one Saturday. It then took a nine frustrating seasons to go up another step finally breaking into the First Division for the 2000-2001 season. After initially playing some evening games at Wordsworth Drive they were invited to play at the home of Taunton Town and left their original venue at the Blackbrook Pavilion alongside the M5.
In 2004 Blackbrook changed its name to Taunton Blackbrook. This was done in order to raise its profile and generally improve its identity locally and create a closer link with Taunton Town. The Taunton Blackbrook Reserve Team went from strength to strength gaining steady promotion through the Taunton Saturday League and also winning the Somerset FA Intermediate Cup.
After the Reserve team were turned down by the County League we changed their home venue and they were accepted into the Somerset County League for the 2005/06 season and won promotion as champions into the Second Division. After political wrangling within the club in the close season the Reserves were allowed to split and rename themselves Creech St Michael who continue to play in Division 2 West.
Taunton Blackbrooks previous best in Division 1 was fifth in the 2004-2005 season and never really enjoyed any cup run until the 06/07 season when they were promoted to the Premier Division and were losing finalists in the County KO Cup. They had the second best defensive record in Division 1 having only conceded 14 goals at home while their forwards have the third best attack record blasting in 79 in the season. The Clubs overall ambition is to gain promotion into the Toolstation Western Football League; they missed out on this Step 6 promotion by 1 pt in the 08/09 season and again were finalists in the County League Knock out cup.
2009/10 was a season of turmoil as long standing Manager Colin Merrick left the club and was eventually replaced by ex Yeovil Town player John Tong then Assistant Manager of Taunton Town. He has brought in Gary Knight and Andy Gill who last year were running the Yeovil U18 squad to assist him and currently the team are in the Errea Somerset County League Premier Division.
Our aim is to gain promotion into the Toolstation Western League, to attract local players who are ambitious to play at a higher standard and to be respected for playing quality football in a fair and sporting manner.
